There is a thread around here about removing some unneeded daemons. Not sure how well it works though.

Put your phone to a clean firmware and update to 4.1. The 4.1 update was a life saver for all 3G/3GS phones. Fixed all the lag/slow down issues.
Not sure on which jb to use then for a 3G? Snowbreeze? I will nit go further than that as I don't want to misinform you.

I wouldn't suggest going to 4.1 if you are worried about speed. 3.1.3 is faster than any of the 4.0 and up firmwares for a 3G.

cheers guys i am running windows on my laptop so i can only use snowbreeze, also is it possible to upgrade to ios 4 from 3.1.3 jailbroken without any issues about being unable to jailbreak your phone again

You can upgrade to iOS 4 but 4 is much slower than 3.1.3
iOS 3.x is fastest, followed by 4.1, followed by 4.0.x
If you need an unlock do NOT upgrade to stock 4.1, do a snowbreeze custom firmware restore.
iOS 4 on iPhone 3G you can jailbreak however you like, redsn0w/snowbreeze/jailbreakme. But I wouldn't recommend going to 4 if you're concerned about speed.
Better to just put your phone in DFU and restore to stock 3.1.3

I think so too, 3g works best on OS 3.1.3

If you do want to update and dont care about unlock, just do what the guy above said and go to 4.1 then use redn0w 0.9.6 to jailbreak.
But like I said before 3.1.3 IMO is the best firmware for a iPhone 3G

I just updated my 3G from 3.1.3 to 4.1 using breezesn0w 2.0.2, I found it is running smoother than before especially when browsing Internet

Just make a custom 4.1 firmware with sn0wbreeze then in itunes press shift and click restore. A window will open where you can choose the 4.1 you just made (sn0wbreeze will put it on your desktop). If you are getting any errors when trying to restore to it just download iReb from the same site that you get sn0wbreeze from. That will prepare your iPhone for a custom firmware so that you wont get any errors.
