[noob] Jailbreak & unlock 3GS on stock 4.0.2

Total noob here. I have a mid 2009 3GS on vanilla 4.0.2, is there any way I can jailbreak and unlock this thing?

It looks like limera1n could jailbreak me if I upgraded to 4.1 but as far as I can tell then I'd end up with a non-unlockable baseband (current baseband is 05.13.04).

Yes, if you restore to 4.1, you will be lock out. NO unlock on this baseband, unless you have the old bootrom, then you can preserve your baseband by using custom firmware.

so, to further exemplify my newbishness, how would I got about getting an "old bootrom" would that require the phone being previously jailbroken or is any way to go about doing that with vanilla 4.0.2?

Congratulation , you have the oldbootrom. Is your iphone currently jailbroken. Do you have 4.0.1 shsh blogs ?

If you don't have shsh blobs available pretty much your only option is to jailbreak straight up on 4.0.2, no you don't have to upgrade to 4.1

You can either use jailbreakme or limera1n to jialbreak then use ultrasnow in cydia to unlock

so if I did this and stayed on 4.0.2, could I then upgrade to 4.1 without losing the unlock if I was already jailbroken?

You can't use jailbreakme. Only limera1n.

No there is currently no way for you to retain your baseband while upgrading. This is only possible on 3.1.2 3GS old bootrom/3G/iPhone 4.

Do this, you might get lucky.
Run Notepad as Admin , open up hosts file and add this line : cwindows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
save it and reboots your pc
Now do the Shift + Restore to 4.0.1 ipsw which you have to download.
If you can restore to 4.0.1, then I can get you to use custom firmware.

Where should I grab the 4.0.1 ipsw? Just my local backed up 4.0.1? It did just dawn on me that I have a 4.0.1 back up from when I upgraded to 4.0.2...

I am connected to wi-fi and I have re-booted multiple times. I never get the limera1n icon on my screen and i cannot find it via iPhone search.

I've had this phone for a month and haven't been able to use it with T-Mobile because I can't get the darn thing jailbroken and unlocked. Am I just out of luck? Thank you for your time!

Limera1n should work at 4.0.2 on a 3gs, if you have 4.0.2 shsh blogs, why don't you try GreenPoison.
