Will using limera1n prevent my 3gs from being unlocked in the future?

I've been looking for a way to upgrade my 3gs 3.12 new bootrom to 4.1 untethered, and I finally heard about limera1n

I am planning to sell my phoe next summer, and want to make sure I can sell it unlocked. If I use lime to goto 4.1, considering current trends, and assuming limera1n doesn't allow an unlock, do you think I'll be stuck at being carrier locked?

Is there another way to upgrade to 4.1, be untethered, and allow me to unlock in the future?

do you think this release will prevent me from unlocking it in the future?

If you'vr got SHSH on store, then you could upgrade to 4.0.2/4.0.1 and jailbreak with limera1n or jailbreakme (4.0.1).

If you go beyond 4.0.2 then you won't be able to unlock your phone.

Custom firmware is out since you are new bootrom.

save ur shsh with tiny umbrella then it will be fine.. saves ur baseband aswell

No, tiny umbrella only preserves the baseband on iPhone 4's.

Please look carefully when giving that advice. OP has a 3GS and what you suggest will lock his phone for a long time to come.

Okay, so the latest unlockable firmware is 4.02? If I want to unlock with 4.1, I have to wait? (for which tool presumingly?)

aka:there's no unlock for 4.1 on 3gs new bootrom yet? Which tool should I wait for?

4.1 will update the baseband to which is not unlockable currently. The only way for a 3GS as of right now to get up to 4.1 and preserve the baseband is to use a custom firmware. Only old boot 3GS that has been jb before can do so. If you either have not been jb before or don't have the old boot phone, you can't go up to 4.1 to preserve the baseband and maintain the unlock.

So my guess is, you'll be looking for a tool that creates cusom firmware to jb. Assuming they'll make a version compatible for new boot 3GS too...

As I understand it, a pwnagetool that uses the limera1n exploit will be released shortly after greenpois0n. Should work for all devices.

Okay cool. So does that mean (by your best guess) if I update to 4.1 now using limera1n, that pwnagetool should eventually allow me to unlock it in the future, since it is being made to use limera1n's exploit? (Hopefully by next June)

Crewxp, No, just don't restore to stock 4.1, wait for new pwnage tools. If you can jailbreak at 4.0.2 and have shsh blogs, you can use limerain at 4.0.2. If anything happens, u can restore to 4.0.2 again. 4.1 has only addition of gamecenter and some bug fixes , unless u want to play paid games online with friends, there is really no real advantage at this point. Just be patience, do not rush into JB at 4.1 , then you will be a happier person

No. You should avoid upgrading/restoring since it'll update your baseband which is the part that is unlocked. An updated baseband isn't unlockable.

The good thing about pwnagetool is that it upgrades the firmware but leaves out the baseband upgrade. So what you should do, if you want to have your baseband at a version that is unlockable, is wait until pwnagetool is released and then make a custom firmware with that.

Pwnagetool should be released with a week or two.

Okay thanks! I almost bit the bullet. There's a lot of apps I cant download now because it says my firmware isnt high enough, and I read that comex had stated that 4.1 was smoother, so thats mainly why I had wanted to upgrade. And I'm not sure if PwnageTool is mac only (on windows).

Anywho, I'll go with 4.0.2 instead. 4.0.2's baseband is currently unlockable, correct?

Yes, 4.0.2 share the same baseband as 4.0 and 4.0.1 ,

And just re-thinking. 4.02 doesnt provide any additional features or fixes (besides the pdf fix), over 4.01, right? Aka: new features, better battery life, more stable, etc.

So would I be better off going to 4.01 with jailbreakme instead of 4.02 limera1n?

Yes, certainly, Jailbreakme is a much better tool than Limera1n because this jb is still buggy on some devices.
