Upgrade Jailbroken iPhone 3G

Ok I have another iPhone 3G that I need help with. It is jailbroken using jailbreakme. It's running 4.0.1. I want to upgrade to 4.1. Could I just click the upgrade button on itunes?

I went to upgrade and it gave me an error (I believe it was 3014 or something like that). What do I do?

Did you upgrade your itunes to the latest yet ?

Did you edit your hosts file ? You must let apple verify your iphone.
Put iphone into recovery mode and hit restore again.

You're speaking a different language to me . Could you tell me what host files are and how do I put my phone into recovery mode?

Have you ever edited your hosts file ? If not, that is fine
Recovery mode : Turn it off , while holding the home button , plug your iphone cable into pc until Itunes Cables Logo appears, this is recovery mode.

Once your iphone is in recovey mode, Itunes will detect and you can restore.

No I've never edited the hosts file. After putting into recovery mode what do I do to upgrade?

No hit restore , not upgrade.

If this still doesn't work, go download the 3g 4.1 ipsw from here :
iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
and then press the Shift key on your keyboard + Restore in Itunes and browse to 4.1 ipsw which you just downloaded.

Ok. I put into recovery mode. It showed up in itunes, I hit restore, it says it's extracting software, is says verifying, but at the end the error popped up and says the iphone "iphone" cannot be restored

Is your computer connected to the internet ? Reboot your pc again and do the restore again.

Ok. I shut down everything overnight and tried again this morning & I downloaded the ipsw like you said and it worked!!! Thanks a million
