3G upgrading options requested
I would like to inquire, what is the highest software version currently that I can update/restore to on the 3G?
My Current 3G
Software: 3.0.1
Baseband: 04.26.08
Bootloader: 5.8
Model: MB499
Phone is Jailbroken/unlocked on 3.0.1.

they say 4.1 is supposed to be alot better on 3G than 4.0, so you can use sn0wbreeze to create a custom 4.1 and restore to that and be jailbroken and unlocked if you need an unlock

Thank you very much for your help guys.
One more thing, so is sn0wbreeze 2.0.2 better to use than redsn0w 0.9.5b5?

I think you got the wrong concept.
Using Snowbreeze to create a custom firmware will help you to preserve your current baseband
Using Redsn0w will only jailbreak after you have restored to stock firmware which updates your baseband.

Sn0wbreeze to 4.1 is the best way if you need an unlock.
Redsn0w will only work to jb 4.1 on a Mac. And like Yeow said, you'd have to be on a stock fw to use it which means you'd end up upgrading the baseband on 4.1 stock.
So if you need an unlock, you'll want to use Sn0wbreeze.

Thanks everyone...you've made it pretty clear now. I'll use stock firmware in sn0wbreeze.
I will post my results.
Again, thanks for clearing my headaches.
