Updating from 3.1.2 to 4.0.1

I see that 4.0.1 can be unlocked, so I'm thinking about trying to upgrade from 3.1.2 since there are some games that won't work. However, when I try, the Apple verification rejects me. Is there anyway to upgrade?

Can you open up Cydia and look at the front page in green letters and tell me what you see?

It does say SHSH: 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 in green at the top.

Nevemind, do this :
Pc : Run Notepad as Admin and open up to your hosts file:
Cwindows\system32\Drivers\etc\hosts and add this line to the bottom,
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
and mark the rest infront with this # to ignore
save it and reboots your pc
Put your iphone into recovery mode
Do the Shift + Restore to stock 4.0.1 ipsw
Once restored, put your official sim to activate
Jailbreakme 2.0 from Safari on your Iphone
Slide to Jailbreak.
Unlock with Ultrasn0w.
That is it.
