You can create a custom firmware for 4.1 with Sn0wbreeze 2.0.2. Then shift+restore to the custom fw in iTunes to get up to 4.1 jailbroken. 4.0/1 isn't very good for the 3G. 4.1 runs much better.

Whatever you do, don't hit the upgrade button. You must shift+restore to a custom firmware.

Edit: I forgot to mention, if you run into any errors during the restore to the custom fw, simply have iReb run and bypass the errors.

If you have a 3G then redsn0w will jailbreak you for 4.1

Fair enough, it's just a 2 step process now instead of 1:

    1. Buy a mac

    2. JB 4.1 with redsn0w

Ok, then open Sn0wbreeze 2.0.2 and select that firmware you downloaded. Then follow the directions.
