Jailbreak 3G on 2.2.1

Yes I know this firmware is severly outdated. I am trying to sell my co-workers iPhone 3G on Ebay and wanted to jailbreak/unlock to increase the value a bit

I tried using redsnow .72 but when I clicked on the 2.2.1 firmware it said unrecognized. I then used 3.0 which seemed to work but when the phone rebooted it just went to the "connect to itunes" logo.

Thankfully I restored in iTunes to 2.2.1 and am now back at square one.

Which program will allow me to jailbreak to 2.2.1. I want to at least upgrade to 3.0 but I don't want to lose the SHSH either.
If I force it through iTunes, I will be stuck on 4.1 and no unlock or jailbreak.

Any suggestions?

You can put it in dfu then shift-click restore to 3.1.3, then use redsn0w 0.9.2 or jailbreakme.com, either will work. You do not need SHSH for a 3G for firmwares prior to 4.0.

0.9.2 will work as well if pointing to the 3.1.2 firmware :P
0.9.4 was just the updated version the dev team released when 3.1.3 came out and is a bit harder to find as it is just linked to in one post on their blog whereas 0.9.2 is still the first link when clicking on redsn0w on their blog. They may want to think about changing that

Wait, I can shift-click in iTunes for 3.1.2? Even if it was 2.2.1 installed? Is that only for 3G? I didn't think I could do that when I had my old 3GS.

Yeah, I tried jailbreakme but was told my firmware was too old for it to work properly.

Yes that is only for 3G. You need SHSH for all firmwares for a 3GS.

Updated to 3.1.2 Now which program for unlocking? ultrasnow?
