can anybody help me with 3.1.2 upgrade?

i bought an iphone 3g of ebay . factory unlocked its on 3.1.2 so i jailbroke using jailbreakme by comex . every thing is fine got cydia installus etc.. just wondered i want to upgrade to 4.0 can i do this ? as it says in itunes only update to 4.1 ?

my phone spec is below

version. 3.1.2

carrier 5.0

model mb489b

modem firmware 05.11.07

my shsh files on cydia

do you reckon i should just leave it as it is ?

or up grade to 4.0

Unless you have your shsh blobs on file for 4.0 firmware you can only upgrade to 4.1 for which there is no jailbreak at the moment. I would recommend just staying where you are anyway and just wait until the 4.1 jailbreak is realeased to upgrade.

isnt ********** used for pirating apps??? no mods im not saying anything bad im just wondering so that i can warn the OP that he shouldnt be talking about them..... and if i am wrong then i am sorry..... but you cant go to 4.0 unless you have SHSH just like the post above me has said..... you can also jailbreak with redsn0w and then use the sn0wbreeze to update to 4.1 and that will preserve the baseband and you will be able to unlock

Just stick with your current OS version. I'm on 3.1.3 and couldn't be happier; I don't have to worry about waiting for the next jailbreak or unlock. Everything works smoothly. Play it safe!

Restore to 3.1.2 and jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.3.

Go ahead and download Sn0wbreeze 2.0.2 and the stock 4.1 ipsw. You can then create a custom fw with Sn0wbreeze and shift+restore to it to get a jb 4.1 on your phone.

Remember, you'll have to restore your phone to a stock 3.1.2 so you can eliminate the jailbreakme jb, then jailbreak again with redsn0w to enable your ability to restore to the custom firmware.

If you need a step-by-step guide, feel free to PM me.

Edit: No SHSHs necessary in your case. We can jump straight from 3.1.2 go 4.1 and jb you no problem so don't worry about the SHSHs.

Hmmm thanks for replys I'm undecied still , and yes shsh are on file for 4.0 4.0.1 4.0.2 and 4.1 it says when I load cydia up . If this goes off my sim card then it's correct vecause I gave my other iPhone to my gf and was on 4.0 . I'm not very good at jailbreaking I sort of know what to do . I had to take other iPhone to pc shop and he charges me a fortune everytime is there an easy way to get to 4.0 or shall I just wait for the greenpois0n or shatter and take it to my pc shop and pay ?

The way I gave you is easiest. 4.0.x is not very good for iPhone 3G. 4.1 runs much better so if anything you'd want to go up to 4.1.

Requirements:
1) sn0wbreeze 2.0.2
2) iReb
3) 4.1 stock ipsw

Steps:
1) find Sn0wbreeze at iH8sn0w.com
2) find iReb at iH8sn0w.con
3) iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From

Your device ipsw begins with iPhone1,2

4) open sn0wbreeze
5) follow directions to creating custom fw
6) when custom fw is created, open iTunes
7) put device in DFU mode

8) shift+restore to the custom fw after iTunes recognizes device

9) if you run into an error, use iReb to bypass

10) you should be jb on 4.1 now
