Please Help!! upgrade 3.1.2 to 4.0.1

Hi all!

I was just wondering if i could follow the same methods of down grading an iphone. Meaning putting the iphone in recovery mode restore to with holding shift and uploading the 4.0.1 file, and finally kick the device out of recovery.

Will that work? or is there a better way?

You can upgrade to 4.0.1 only if you have shsh blogs with Cydia. What kind of iDevice is yours ?

The device is an iPhone 3gs 32gb. The problem with shsh is my cydia doesn't startup anymore if I click on the cydia app it just opens and closes.

Download Tiny Umbrella version 4.1.4
Run it, plug in your iphone
Click Advance tab
Device/Version: Select 3gs 4.0.1 shsh blogs
Request : Cydia
Click Save Shsh
Wait for answer, if it is Yes
Start Tss Server
Do the Shift + Restore to 3Gs 4.0.1 ipsw which you have to download from here :

do i have to kick it out of recovery and is it okay to use the new iTunes 10.1?

When i save the shsh for 4.1 it works, but i cant jailbreak it huh?

You will have 4.1 shsh blogs because Apple is still signing this firmware. Since you don't have 4.0.1 shsh blogs, then you can't downgrade. You have to wait for new jailbreak.

Oops , wait a minute, how come you don't have 4.0.1 shsh blogs, you were jailbroken before ? Did you not click Yes to make my life easier?

Yes my iphone is jailbroken however cydia does not load anymore. It opens then closes and thats why i want to restore and re-jailbreak

also, i dont necessarily need to downgrade. just want to upgrade to 4.0.1 b/c thats still jailbreakable.

Then Cydia should have your 4.0.1 shsh blogs, I don't understand why you don't have it, do you remember seeing on front page of Cydia, the green letters about shsh saved.

Without 4.0.1 shsh blogs, you have to wait for new jailbreak at 4.1.

I wouldnt do anything to downgrade untill you fix cydia... Try rejailbreaking it with jailbreakme.com or however you did before & see if it fixes cydia..

I have a 3G unlocked on 3.1.2 is there any real reason why I should upgrade to IOS4?

I tried blackra1n and jailbreakme it doesn't reinstall cydia nor solve the problem

Instructions : Put your iphone into recovery mode .
Download Snowbreeze 2.0.2 from www.iH8sn0w.com and download the 3gs 4.1 ipsw from here :
iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
Create your custom 4.1 from Snowbreeze 2.0.2 use Simple mode is fine.
Do the shift + Restore to custom 4.1 ipsw
You can unlock with Ultrasn0w again.

I am getting an error that states:

The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600).

Yeah, in future if your iphone crashes, put your iphone in recovery mode and just restore to custom firmware again. Stay away from stock frimware and you will be fine.
IOS 4.2 will be out soon, when it is out, just wait for the new Snowbreeze , and when it is out, do the same thing , build your custom 4.2 and restore to it, you will be the first to get the jailbreak.
