    Default iPhone from another country

Ok, so apologies if its already answered but i've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a solid answer. I think I know what to do but need a second opinion cause i'm confused.

I got an iPhone 3Gs from overseas that is in activation mode, I know to use the phonebook card but I don't have one at the moment. So it being in this mode I do not know what OS is on the phone, (*3001 doesn't work), i've been thinking about just DFU the phone, upgrade (hopefully) to 4.0 and jailbreak but I seen after you click activate phone you have to restore it again with the custom firmware and I think i'd be back in the same spot.
Does anyone know of any better ideas? Rather than "order the phonebook sim"

    Thanks

No matter what you need a sim card to activate the phone, either a phonebook or one from the official carrier for the phone. Even if you do a restore you'll get stuck at the emergency call screen. Plus if you do a restore right now it will go to 4.1 which is not jailbreakable, but more importantly for you unlockable.
