I'll make it easy for you.
Go to this site, find the link on the right side for TinyUmbrella (for your OS), and download it.
The Firmware Umbrella
Connect your iphone to your PC via the apple usb cable and make sure the necessary USB drivers automatically load.
Then launch TinyUmbrella and do the following:
1) check box for advanced settings
2) in preferences box, make sure it recognizes your iphone
3) in the advanced box, select "request version" that matches iphone 4 v4.0.2
4) then click "save SHSH" button
If your phone has SHSH blobs saved previously, this should be able to find it from Cydia. If not, you are out of luck.
Repeat step 3 and 4 for 4.0.1 as well and earlier versions. Maybe you'll get lucky if the previous owner had saved SHSH blobs in Cydia. If it is a brand new phone, you are out of luck.
Important note --
Above all else, don't ever upgrade to 4.1 firmware in iTunes unless you have TinyUmbrella up and running. TinyUmbrella will prevent your modem baseband from upgrading from v1.59.00 to the newer version. That way, when the jailbreak for 4.1 becomes available, you can use one of the existing carrier unlocks for v1.59 baseband.
