3GS on old 3.1.x

I have a iphone 3GS on the old 3.1.x firmware is it possible to upgrade to 4.0.1 and jailbreak/unlock or not till the next jailbreak is available. This phone has never been jailbroken before therefore no SHSH blobs are saved. Thanks for your help.

at this point with no shsh's for 4.0.1 the only official firmware you can restore to is 4.1, depending on whether or not you have an old bootrom 3GS and depending on extactly which 3.1.x you are on there is the possibility that you can jailbreak and load a custom 4.0.1 (reguardless of which bootrom you have you should still be able to jailbreak the firmware you are currently on)

Check your bootrom with these instructions:

If you are old bootrom then you can get onto 4.1 and unlock, but new bootrom you will only be able jailbreak and lock where you are.

Which firmware are you on exactly?

alright guys so again its a 3GS on firmware 3.1(7c144) and bootroom 359.3 which i understand is the old bootrom? so whats the next step from here?

OK, what I'm struggling with is to find out what can Jailbreak you phone where it is. I think maybe one of the versions of Redsnow can do it. I'll keep searching or maybe someone else can help?

Once you're jailbroken, you can use Snowbreeze 2.0.2 to create a custom firmware and take your phone to the latest 4.1 firmware (but will maintain your baseband) so you then simply install ultrasnow and you're done.

Just need to figure out how to JB at 3.0 first......

I'm pretty sure that a stand alone jailbreak for 3.1 was never released, you had to be already jailbroken on a lower firmware and use pwnagetool to create a custom firmware for 3.1, so it looks as though you are stuck waiting for the next jailbreak

Jailbreak your 3.1 with Redsn0w 0.8 and point to 3.0. Then once jailbroken, update Cydia. Now Restore to Custom Firmware of Snowbreeze 2.0.2 which will take you to 4.1 You will be fine.

No, snowbreeze will get you to 4.1

Ok, you have to jailbreak your 3.1 first. If Redsn0w 0.8 doesn't do it, use Redsn0w 0.9.2 to jailbreak it first.

If you don't jailbreak at 3.1 first, you cannot use Snowbreeze.
