I just tried using my desktop to restore it, didn't work.

Anyways I clicked on display on TU it says:
The following devices / Ecids can be restored safely:
    iphone3gs 4.0.1 (8a306)-1078742401807

Itunes version is 10. I downloaded it this morning.

    127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Thats what I have under my hosts. It seems like there are too many lines.

Yup, did you already highlight 4.0.1 shsh blogs under device/ version, keep the tss server running, and do the restore to 4.0.1

How does tiny umbrella know what version you want to restore, you have to tell it to.
Click Advanced tab in TU and you will see Device /version, you must select 4.0.1 shsh blogs and then start tss server.

Like I said earlier, the phone is black, no apple, no itune cable logo, nothing. Even when i hard reset it. Press standby + homebutton for a minute. Nothing displays on my phone. I assume its DFU mode.

    Let me think

Hard reset : Hold both the button until it power off , and reboots again. Does it do anything ?

If you can turn it off, then when it is off, hold the Home button and plug your iphone in until Itunes cable logo comes on and then let go.

If you want screen shots or anything of the sort I can do my best to provide.

I can't tell if its on or off. The screen is black, the only way I can tell my phone is connected is with the sound my computer makes when it is connected.

Absolutely no visual on my phone. No logos no cable, absolutely nothing! Even with hard reset or anything else. I can't tell if its on or off.

I have seen cases like that, black nothing.
When you do a restore, does the apple logo comes on, when it comes on, plug out the cable, it will trigger in recovery mode.
To be able to restore, it must cycle through white screen, not black

When I restore, I get a white screen, then the screen gets brighter then itunes give me an error.

I don't get any icons, just plain white screen

I'm going to update to 4.1 and unplug as soon as apple icon pops up.

Ok, do it again, but this time pull out the cable before the error comes on , if no recovery logo comes on, do a hard reset.
