JailBreak question/Restore

Hi everyone i have a question i have a 3gs with 3.1 and i have a iphone 4 if i were to restore my 3gs and when setting it up i selected to use backup from iphone 4 would it copy the version also or would it just upgrade to the newest version? I would like to jailbreak this phone but it looks like i cant unless i get the shsh

ok so with the 3GS you have never jailbroken? if so why don't you just jailbreak it now.

Never jailbroken but I want to and can't figure out how to do it

If your phone is on firmware 4.0.1 and below just go in your phones browser and type www.jailbreakme.com

It will then install cydia on your springboard (the result of jailbreaking)

But if it is on 4.1 then you may not be able to jailbreak.

I have tried jailbreakme.com it says not supported it's version 3.1

there was never an official tool released to jailbreak 3.1 on a 3GS, since the phone has never been jailbroken and has no shsh's the only firmware you can restore to at this point is 4.1 which isn't jailbreakable, so sit tight and wait for the next jailbreak and then decide how you want to proceed from there (p.s. jailbreakme will only jailbreak 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 4.0, and 4.0.1)

So at this moment there's no way for me to upgrade to a version higher then 3.1 that would b jailbreak able?
