Need help with a 3GS that got its OS removed

Ive got a 3GS which used to be running ios4.0 Phone's iBoot version is 359.3.2 [latest?]

I 'erased all content' on it and now its stuck in an infinite loop as the OS got deleted (didn't know that). Cydia used to say that this device has blobs stored for 4.0 and 4.0.1 Restoring a pwnage cooked custom 3.1.2 or 4.0 returns 1600 and 1604 error in recovery mode and DFU mode. Ive tried it in conjunction with the Umbrella tool but the tool didnt listen to any commands from Itunes. Maybe I did that wrong...?

What are my options? Should I wait for a new pwnage tool to remedy this? Can sn0wbreeze help when there is no OS on device? I'd prefer to have an untethered unlocked device. As a shortterm solution I can settle with tethered option if there is one.

You've got new bootrom, so you can't use any custom firmware.

So you should do a restore to 4.0 and 4.0.1 and use jailbreakme. I'm not sure what instructions you are following to do the restore but you should update to itunes 10, close itunes, start TSS server in tinyumbrella, start itunes, put phone in DFU (not restore) and restore to stock firmware (4.0 or 4.0.1). Kick out of recovery with tiny umbrella if necessary.

Alright, I'll follow the instructions here: [Howto] Setup local 3GS restore verification server (ECID SHSH) and report. Just one question, will I be able to activate my phone since its not on AT&T?

Blackrain can do it on 3.1.2 I believe. You'd need your 3.1.2 SHSH though.

Ok, I don't think the SHSH blogs were saved for 3.1.2
If I upgrade to stock 4.0.1, and the phone is not activated, can I still use it as iPod and hope for an unlock without having to use at&t sim? Or would upgrading put me in deeper crap than I am already?

Does it need to be a working AT&T sim with a plan or just any AT&T sim that will do the trick? I can start looking for friends who've been to the US that may have their old sims if it works with any phone.

Yes you should get a SIM. Blackra1n will give you a tethered JB.

Success,
- I set hosts file to go to saurik's server instead of apple.
- Upgraded to 4.0.1
- Took the phone to someone with a universal sim
- Had it activate via itunes
- went to jailbreakme.com and jailbroke (got cydia)
- had to install a hacktivation pack since the phone complained of change of sim
- Win. Running a 3gs untethered on 4.0.1. Thanks all for your help esp westonben!
