Right, my idiot brother updated my 3GS to 4.1. Thanks. It was on 3.something and jailbroken with spirit. I can't remember if cydia had automatically saved my blobs but I hadn't done it myself (you'll notice stupidity runs through the family). I tried to downgrade back to 3.1 and all seemed to be going fine until the final step of using tinyumbrella to kick out of recovery mode. It showed an error 16 and now the phone is set at "slide for emergency" mode. Can someone more intelligent than me offer any help? Thanks in advance

Try restoring to 4.0.1 and then use jailbreakme.com to jailbreak. 'Slide for emergency' means you need to activate the phone with either an original sim or a phonebook sim before you can access it.
