4.1 on a 3g is jailbreakable!
Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4.1 with PwnageTool [Guide] | Redmond Pie
Here is guide to JB 4.1 on the 3G (and the 3G only) and keep your previous baseband, so it is still unlockable. It DOES work as I'm running it right now.
Now I just need to see if 4.1 is actually faster than 4.0.1.
EDIT: I should add--this is NOT the Redsnow JB that half-works, this uses a modded pwnagetool. You don't lose your phone.app and cydia works.Last edited by CaptBojank; 09-20-2010 at 06:02 PM.

All 3G users can use this Pwnage tools 4.1 to restore to jailbrak 4.1, but the state of jailbroken Iphone prior to restore must not be jailbroken by Spirit Nor Jailbreakme.com.

Does this really work? I was told in another forum here, that redsn0w would JB my 3G running 4.1. I tried it and almost bricked my iPhone. Technically it worked because it loaded Cydia. However wifi didn't work and my phone app disappeared, among other problems. Plus it wouldn't shut off. I had to force it into recovery mode and restore via itunes.
So again my question...does it really work. Has anyone else been successful?

Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 is not meant to jailbreak OS 4.1 and since this Pwnage tools 4.1 is an official release, it should work.

The link to PwnageTool 4.01 downloads a bad dmg file!!!!!
Found PwnageTool 4.01. It only gives options for the 3G(S) and the 2G. No option for the 3G!Last edited by garyh99; 09-20-2010 at 01:46 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

It worked perfectly for my 3G that was running 4.1. It slows the OS down a bit, but it is 100% functional. Cydia crawls.

i switched to 4.1 when it was released, and really liked it. honestly, it was quite a lot faster. i downgraded to get my jailbreak back. my question is, if i upgrade and jailbreak 4.1 with this method, will it be slower than if i wait for shatter to be released?

It is not the jailbreak that slows it down for 3G, Apple came up with 4.1 for 3G to fix the bugs on iOS 4.0. You know you are supposed to restore to Custom firmware created by Pwnage tools 4.1 for 3G, don't ever restore to Stock 4.1 you will be screwed on both jailbreak and unlock.

You have to download the stock 4.1 ipsw and also the pwnage tools 4.1 for 3g and build your own. If you can find one on the internet, then you don't have to build one. Once this customize ipsw is created, then you do the Shift + restore to the custom firmware of iOs 4.1. Becareful , don't choose the wrong one like the stock firmware whick will break your unlock.

After a day of playing with it, it is a lot faster than 4.0.1 was. I would say it's on par with 3.1.3, on most things. I have multitasking enabled and wallpaper turned off.
Battery life is crap though. I could do two days of standby on 3.1.3, but with 4.1, I lost 20% between 2am and 8am this morning. I'm going to run the battery dead tonight and see if it needs to be re-calibrated. I'm not running Ultrasn0w since I don't need an unlock.
Most things on Cydia work (Cydia speed is the same as before, slow). Backgrounder doesn't want to work and activator complains that I need a different firmware, but it does work. No probs with sbettings.
As for PC users. The only way I know is to have somebody with OSX make a IPSW for you.
EDIT: A hard-reset SEEMS to have helped the battery issue. I'll keep note.Last edited by CaptBojank; 09-20-2010 at 06:38 PM.

You can disable the multitask by installing Disable Multitask for Winterboard. Use backgrounder and circuitous/Multifl0w.
The folder option is pretty cool.
