You need to downgrade to 4.0.1 and you will need shsh blogs to do that.

The Can I Downgrade/Upgrade/Unlock/Jailbreak and what are SHSH Thread
You can read this for more info on SHSH and if you can downgrade and jailbreak.
As for the 1015 error that is an expected error when trying to downgrade, just use tiny umbrella to kick it out of recovery.

Yeah, use tiny umbrella to kick out of recovery for 3G.
Your iphone 4 , did it come as 4.0.2, if that is the case , then you don't have 4.0.1 shsh blogs and you can't downgrade.
But there is one thing you can do now is to use Tiny Umbrella and save your 4.1 shsh blogs with Cydia and also save it locally for future restore.
Edit : You can also check if you have iphone 4, 4.0.1 shsh file with Cydia, but I doubt you have any.Last edited by iYeow; 09-18-2010 at 02:09 PM.

For the i4, if you can't downgrade and you want to upgrade to 4.1 to use the coming jailbreak, then be sure to upgrade using TinyUmbrella or with your hosts file pointed to Cydia's server. What this will do is keep your baseband at a version that is unlockable. If you simply do a normal restore in iTunes, the BB will be upgraded to a version that likely will not have an unlock for a long time to come.
