You wont be able to go to 6.1.2 or lower without good SHSH for those firmwares.

Sure can. Won't be with evasion though.

Very true! What he/she 'should' do is check the baseband to see if qualifies for unlocking. If so, update w/ a custom FW!

Thanks for the replies. So my baseband/modem firmware is 03.10.01, and I'm on 4.2.1.

I cannot do a tethered jailbreak, as I have to turn my phone off regularly...

Should we expect a tethered jailbreak soon on the iPhone 4?

    Sorry- I don't quite understand.

What do you mean by good SHSH? From where? I've saved my SHSH just now with TinyUmbrella.

I've looked at a jb wizard, and they say I can jailbreak upto 6.1.2 with evasi0n or redsn0w

I just want to know what the newest, jailbreakable iOS is for my device. I've got an iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.1 (03.10.01).

6.1.2 will be untethered. Anything higher than that will be tethered.

Cheers for that- I keep getting a 3194 error though... I've tried so many solutions (like changing the host file) but nothing fixes it. Any ideas? I'm using the latest iTunes (11.0.4) on Windows 7

I've tried changing the host file, and I"ve just used TinyUmbrella to run the TSS Server. I didn't get the 3134 error, but I did now get the 1604 error

The SHSH file is saved in two places automatically (on your computer and in the jailbreak cloud). Unfortunately, saving them now doesn't do anything for you because you would've had to save them prior to or while 4.2.1 was released.

Your phone can ONLY upgrade to 6.1.3 at this point and its a tethered jailbreak. There is no way to go to 6.1.2 anymore...

    Sorry, bud

BTW, you said you keep getting a 3194 error. Are you still on 4.2.1 afterwards?

If so, then there's another program on TinyUmbrellas website called FixRecovery. Download and run that to see if it allows you upgrade. Remember, though, you'll only be able to go to 6.1.3

Ohh ok- thanks so much for clearing that up. Yep- after the 3194 I'm still on 4.2.1. What would be best- jailbreaking 4.2.1 now, or upgrading to 6.1.3 and waiting?

Which means I can't switch the iPhone off- correct? If there's a tethered one now, should I assume an untethered one isn't far?

There won't be an untethered one until after iOS 7 is released.

If you're able to use your phone right now, you might just want to wait. It's possible you can find a jailbreak tweak that let's you fake your firmware so you can download current apps from the AppStore

Ok cheers- I just tried jailbreaking 4.2.1 with redsn0w. Redsn0w did some stuff and then said "The rest of this process takes place on your device". However, my phone is stuck on the apple logo with a half full spindle on top. What options do I have?

Use the FixRecovery program it told you about. It'll get you out of that screen and leave you jailbroken!

If that doesn't work, get GreenPois0n RC6.1 and run that jailbreak
