Need help upgrading and jailbreaking iphone 3gs on 3.1

I have a 3gs on 3.1 firmware. I want to upgrade and jailbreak it. I have tried to upgrade the firmware to 4.0.1 but it won't let me error 3194, both restore and dfu mode. I have edited the file with notepad 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com. I have tried tinyumbrella but it will only let me save the shsh file for 4.1 firmware and nothing earlier. Is there anyway to upgrade and jailbreak this phone?

Jailbreak your 3.1 iphone with Blackra1n.exe first.
If you have Itunes 9.1 and above, place Blackra1n in here :
32 Bit – CProgram Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support and create a shortcut onto your desktop and run it from there.

Now , for pc : Download Snowbreeze 1.6.2 or 1.7 and also download the stock 4.0 firmware onto your desktop. Create a custom firmware from Snowbreeze_4.0.ipsw.
Put Iphone into Recovery mode, you will need Itunes atleast 9.2 &
Now Shift + Restore to Snowbreeze_4.0.ipsw
Once restored , you are jailbroken at iOS 4.0
