Why don'you downgrade to 3.1.3 for 3G, it runs well and fast but you have lost your unlock.

I never jailbroke it before, how do I downgrade to 3.1.3?

Download 3.1.3 for your device from iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download and shift-click restore (option-click on mac) and select the downloaded firmware.
Jailbreak with jailbreakme.com if you can activate
if not jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.4 (right?) lots of tutorials if you google

Sure you can downgrade if you want to jailbreak.
Make sure your hosts file is not edited to point to Cydia, you must let Apple verify your restore.
Put Iphone into DFU mode
Do the Shift + Restore to 3.1.3 ipsw
Error 1015 pops up, use Tiny Umbrella to kick out of recovery
Once booted up in Emergency Screen
Run Redsn0w 0.9.4 for 3G and point to 3.1.2 ipsw when ask to browse.
Once finished you are jailbroken at 3.1.3 but you cannot unlock because you have updated your Baseband.Last edited by iYeow; 09-18-2010 at 04:27 PM.

No, you can't, unless you edit your hosts file to prevent iTunes from connecting to the activation server at Apple.
Sadly, on the last occasion, I could not even restore to the firmware I already had, even though I *had* edited the hosts file. iTunes couldn't contact the activation server, it refused to recognise Saurik's server as being valid, and it refused to go further. I got stuck, I am now on 4.1 and I await the next jailbreak, if it should come, with bated breath.
I have a legal unlock so that's not an issue, but there are a couple of apps in Cydia which I paid for and which I would like to keep using at some point.

Wrong, for 3G, you can restore to 3.xx without shsh blogs & you have to point to Apple , this is where you made your mistake. There is no shsh blogs in Cydia, to authenticate , you must let Apple verify it

I can't test it but everywhere I've ever read say you can restore to any 3.x.x on a 3G, just not a 4.x.x without SHSH.

Is this a 3G? You should be able to downgrade to 3.1.3 with no problems, and jailbreak.
iTunes should be latest version.

I've always had problems with redsn0w.
If you're on windows you should be able to get it to works perfectly if you boot into safe mode.
