Have a 2g iPhone and need to upgrade but having problems
I'm on 3.01 jailbroken/unlocked fw for my iPhone 2g, and I want to upgrade to thee newest software available for my phone (3.1.3). However, whenever I try to upgrade to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3, I get an error that says "could not be updated, an unknown error occurred (21). What can I do to fix this? Also, I'm upgrading, so I can jailbreak ( and unlock) it again with Redsnow. But I need help getting to that fw.

since you are already jailbroken just use a custom firmware (google is your friend) and try restoring to that, I'm not 100% but it seems like I read that error 21 is hardware related so there may not be anything you can do

Why do you think it's a hardware problem?

Use tiny umbrella to kick it out of recovery, download 3.1.3 ipsw onto your desktop and do the shift + restore to 3.1.3 ipsw again.

^ It wasn't in recovery. But I'll try 3.1.3 with the shift button because I tried using the traditional 3.1.3 that cane with Apple, but I got the same results.

have you tried it? the shift + Restore, you didn't edit any of your hosts file right. What Itunes version do you have , atleast 8.2 is good

I read around and some people have stated that creating a new user account on your computer (not in iTunes, your actual computer's user accounts) and installing iTunes to it will solve the problem.
