1st timer- help with cydia and possible upgrade

afternoon my fellow iphoners.

1 am so new to this its not funny
just bought a jailbroken iphone 3gs
software 3.1.2.

here is my problem my cydia shows 7 changes that need to be done but it won't happen, i have tried several times and nothing need help with this also i would want to upgrade to a 4.0 if possible. i would like step by step procedures ( if possible)
so that my phone does not get locked up

my cydia shows shsh: ios 4.0, 4.01, 4.0.2
and on the tabs below shows "upgrading to 4.0.2? read this"
i also get a gpg error - signatures were invalid nodata 1 nodata 2

now i have 2 changes that need to be done
available upgrades

CYDIA COMMUNITY SOURCES
CYDIA INSTALLER

This seems like it must be a normal procedure for Cydia as I went through the same thing today after jailbreaking my phone. The easiest solution is to come out of Cydia and go back in. Let it load up....could take a while. Once that's done, press the icon at the bottom where it has a small 7. It will then upgrade and install the packages.

i have tried that several times and keep getting error messages
like sub process error code 1, also trying to overwrite sinfulliphone appsync31.

So i'm still stuck a where is started from..

Try going into cydia then manage then packages and find appsync then click modify then remove it. Then reload cydia. Be sure to get the correct appsync for your version. Apppsync 3.1.x

it's fixed, but was unable to load up this version of Apppsync 3.1.x but the apppsync for OS 3.1... not sure where to find this stuff. i wissh there was a manual where i can find this and then upload them my self..
again thanks for the help , now is it poss that i can upgrade to 4.0...

Yeah u will need to use tiny umbrella to upgrade to 4.0.1 there is a guide on this site of exactly how to do that. I used it and had no problems. Well nothing that wasn't easily remedied.
