To update to 4.0.1 you need shsh blogs.
You have to edit your hosts file with Notepad to point to Cydia, add this line to your hosts file :
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
Save it, reboot your pc
Do the Shift + Restore to 4.0.1 ipsw
If Success, activate it with sim card and
Jailbreakme.com on your Iphone.

AFAIK you don't need SHSH blobs for iPhone 3G? That's what I've been told anyway.
So I'm assuming just download 4.0.1 firmware for 3G from Apple's website and shift+update in iTunes and point it to that firmware. Then jailbreak. Someone with a bit more experience can probably confirm/deny this...

So if you use tinyumbrella you don't need to edit the host files to point to cydia?
