I bought pre-owned IPhone-3G. It came with firmware 4.0.2 installed. As this time is it possible to JB & Unlock this phone?

Just to re-confirm I don't have SHSH blobs backed up for this phone as I bought it pre-owned and it came with Version: 4.0.2(8A400) and Modem Firmware: 05.13.04 . So its JB/Unlockable?

For any reason do I need to backup my current SHSH blobs ? Which one should I use iPhone1,2_4.0.2_8A400_Restore.ipsw or iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw ?

You already have 4.0.2 on your iphone, when you run Redsn0w, it will ask you to browse to , choose iphone1,2_4.0_xxxx.ipsw

I got the JB and Unlock done. However every time it reboots I get the message "Waiting for activation this may take some time. then I'm given an option to to Dimiss.

Please does anyone know how to get rid of this message or solution to it ?

What carrier are you using ? After you unlock, put your sim card in and go to Setting > General > About and let it update carrier setting. It should activate your iphone, if you don't let it activate, the message won't go away.

I've tried Redsnow and it kept hanging after going through the install. I used Blackrain instead, but now have a phone that I'm unable to unlock. Is this due to the baseband or bootloader? Fuzzyband and Ultrasnow haven't fixed it.

Bootloader Version is 05.09 [G2M3S2]
Baseband is ICE2-05.14.02

Should I retry using Redsnow or is there another method I can use to unlock? What about Blacksnow, would that work?

Is there a way to downgrade the baseband? On some old 3G it is, right?

Only if you have bootloader 5.8, but very few 3G iphone has it. Ever since then, Up till today, no baseband can be downgraded.
