upgrading from 3GS 3.1 to 4.0.1?

My sister has an iPhone 3GS on T-Mobile with 3.1 right now. What do I need to do to upgrade it to 4.0.1?

Download Pwnage tools 4.0.1 and download the stock 4.0 ipsw. Create a custom firmware of iOS 4.0 not 4.0.1. Once created, do a Shift + Restore to Custom 4.0.ipsw. That's it.

Edit : From Cydia, let it update and install Ultrasn0w to unlock for T-mobile.

I think you have the old bootrom, give me the first 5 digits of your serial number starting from the left.

Yes, 3Gs requires shsh if only you restore to stock firmware, but if you are restoring to custom firmware, then shsh blogs is not required.

Yes, you have the old bootrom, so you can restore to custom firmware and once restored, you are already jailbroken. You don't have to mess with hosts file and shsh blogs as long as you stay with Custom Firmware.

Okay. Can you tell me step by step (maybe with some details) on what to exactly do? I always try to be careful when I mess with iPhone. The last thing I want is the phone to be bricked forever

Download the things I mentioned and build your custom firmware , when building it, by default it will activate the iphone for you, and when finished ,it will be placed on your desktop. Put your iphone into recovery mode ( Turn off your iphone and while holding the Home Button, plug your iphone into your Mac and wait until an Apple Itunes Logo appears, Itunes, will check with Apple for Restore and Then for Mac, I think is Alt /Fn + Restore to the cfw you created.

Make sure you havd atleast Itunes 9.2 or higher

and one of the user told me there is no way I can upgrade from 3.1 to iOS.

He doesn't know you have the old bootrom, I can tell because you are at OS 3.1 and only 3.1.2 out of the box has new bootroms.

New bootroms must only restore to Stock firmware and you need shsh blogs if you want to restore to an OS if Apple has stopped signing.

Trust me, you will never regret.. OR someone agree with me...
