NEED JAILBREAK HELP! iPhone 3GS 4.0 with 05.13.04

I just bought an iPhone 3GS off of eBay thinking I would be able to jailbreak it. Before I get started, here are specs (from what I know):

Model: 3GS MC
Software: 4.0 (8A293)
Firmware: 05.13.04 6.4
- I believe it was unlocked at a previous point but never had SHSH blobs saved.

Upon getting it, I connected to wi-fi and loaded jailbreakme.com on safari. First time ,it crashed and went back to the home screen. I thought nothing of it and tried again. I tried about 30 time snow and nothing. After researching it crashing, i cam upon two alternative methods, modmyi.com version and the e-mailing method. I tried the modmyi version abut 20 times and the e-mail method keeps saying it cannot connect to server. Before giving up and turning around to sell it, I figured i'd try to restore it to the 4.0 for a clean install. After that failed a time or two, I found out that I have the 'GM"? version of 4.0 (it comes with GameCenter). I thought I would upgrade then downgrade to the other 4.0 (without Gamecenter) but I'm having trouble getting it to update to anything as the new OS 4.1 is out, which updates the firmware.

- Is there anyway to update an iPhone to a newer software, that is NOT the current/newest one out at the moment?
- Has anyone heard of any solutions to jailbreakme.com crashing and returning to home screen?

I'm just looking for any insight to know whether its worth keeping or if I should sell ASAP. Any advice would be appreciated.

Try restoring to 4.0 or 4.0.1 ipsw again. Here is what you should do :
Edit your hosts file to point to Cydia by adding this line,
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
save it and reboot your pc.
Put your iphone into recovery mode and do the Shift + Restore to either 4.0 or 4.0.1 ipsw.
Hopefully you have the magical shsh blogs on file with Cydia.

I've tried this method as it was the first one I did, as mentioned above. Still no luck. Since it's a new iPhone (to me), I do not have SHSH blobs on file for it. I have other SHSH files for other iPhones I've had in the past.

Does having the Gold Master(GM) version of 4.0 make a difference?

Yes it is for developer, so the Firmware is not the official release for public

Is there anyway to revert it to the official release for the public? Would it make a difference of being able to jailbreak or not?

You could restore to 4.0, 4.0.1 only if you have the required shsh blogs either with Cydia or stored locally on your pc. Without it, you can only restore to 4.1 which breaks your jailbreak.
Download the latest tiny umbrella version 4.1.4, i think, and choose advanced option and grab from Cydia to see if you have 4.0 or 4.0.1 shsh blogs. If you can grab it, then you are able to restore/downgrade.
