Restore to a custom firmware either by Pwnage tools 4.0.1 or Snowbreeze 1.6.2 or 1.7. You need the stock firmware of 4.0 to cook your CFW.
Put your iphone into recovery mode and do the Shift + Restore..
Once you are restored, you are already jailbroken at iOS 4.0. This time unlock with Ultrasn0w.Last edited by iYeow; 09-09-2010 at 09:21 PM.

4.0.1 was a useless update, pretty much just changed the size of the signal bars, stay at 4.0 until a jailbreak for 4.1 is released

I just did this exact upgrade today and encountered the "error 1600" when trying to do the upgrade after putting the iphone in recovery mode. I then tried from itunes without first putting the phone in recovery mode and it worked fine.
What is the advantage (if any) of putting the phone in recovery mode?
