I have a 3gs and no matter what i do it will not downgrade. I downloaded the specific software for 3gs and itunes keeps giving me an error message firmware file invalid straight away.
Any ideas? Cheers

Invalid usually means the wrong firmware, you can download from here :
iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From
and it should be ipsw format, if it is downloaded as .zip or .rar, rename the ext from .zip to .ipsw.

If you have the new bootrom 3GS you need to have SHSH backups to restore to the previous firmware. Back up your SHSH with firmware upbrella:
The Firmware Umbrella
There are many guides on youtube on how to do this.

Have you tried on a different pc? It is possible some of your windows files or Itunes are corrupted.

Are you positive you are downloading the correct firmware and it isn't getting corrupted?

+1....redownload the firmware from the link yeow gave you, use either chrome, firefox, or opera, not Internet Explorer or Safari and try again, also as stated if you don't have shsh's saved locally using tinyumbrella or on saurik's server then you will not be able to restore to any firmware that apple isn't signing

I think you need to downgrade your iTunes to pre version 9.1 like 9.0.3, 9.0.2 or 9.0.1. I remember when I tried I had to downgrade iTunes 1st before I downgraded firmware. Also you will need to delete your iTunes library or copy & paste it elsewhere in your computer because an older version of iTunes won't work. It will say it does not recognize your library & iTunes won't open because this library was created by a newer version of iTunes! I think, DOH!

That link you're using for firmware (the appldnld.apple.com one) is the official source of the firmware--the file's good, odds are.
Does the error say "the device is ineligible for this build," does it say "the firmware file is not compatible" or does it say "invalid firmware file (or something to that effect)?"
I'm thinking the IPSW itself is not the problem here... we can have you run some tests on it to check the integrity of the file if need be.Last edited by Orby; 09-10-2010 at 01:26 AM.
