Default Downgrade from 4.0.2->3.1.3 w/o hash?

    Is it possible?

I upgraded to 4.0.2 in haste without thinking to check if there were any restrictions (lo and behold... i found out later). So, i've tried to put my phone in dfu mode and i can't even get past "hold power and home for 10 seconds" without it just turning off and not doing anything. I've tried doing a couple of searches and read about SHSH hashing to cydia and what not. I didn't do it before I tried to dfu it.

I don't know what to do but I have a feeling there's some way to get around it. I just want to get my phone back to 3.1.3 because all the iOS4 features definitely can't run smoothly on 3g hardware. So if someone could help me out and help me figure out what i can do to recover my phone from brick status.

    1) 4.1 is coming out in a couple days and will run well on iphone 3g.
    2) If you want to restore to 3.1.3 now download tinyumbrella and check which SHSH file you have. you will be able to restore to those firmwares after you start TSS server.
    3) The easiest way: update to 4.0.2 and jailbreak with redsn0s 0.9.5. Deal with the slowness for a couple days and hopefully the dev team will have a jailbreak ready whenb 4.1 comes out

the 3G doesn't require shsh's for 3.1.3, only 4.0 +, should just be a simple shift+restore in iTunes, try recovery mode if you can't get into dfu mode

And I think he'll need to downgrade to iTunes 9.1.x to make it work. Not certain, I just seem to remember 9.2 and up give problems with this.

iTunes 9.2 works fine for a 2g restore to 3.1.2 from 3.1.3 but not sure about a 3G, could very well need to downgrade to 9.1, thanks for pointing that out Trooper Sam

Thanks, Silent Six! I wasn't too sure on that one, so glad to hear from somebody who's done it.

I swear, if I could just get a small pile of "bricked" iPhones, I could do some serious learning!

You seem to think you cant get into DFU mode, but turning off is part of the process. Just follow the instructions. Hold the buttons for 10 seconds then release the power and hold home. The phone might appear to turn off during this period (resets after about 8 seconds), but just ignore it. IT WILL go into DFU mode if you follow the instructions. You WILL see it appear in iTunes after a little while in DFU mode. Just trust the instructions...

As you have a 3G you will be able to restore to 3.1.3 using a DFU restore and selecting the right firmware in iTunes when you Shift / Option click the restore button...
I did this last night, so I know it works...

you can downgrade you 3g without shsh blobs just follow instruction carefully...

Step 1: Make sure you have latest iTunes installed, Now connect your iPhone to your computer.

Step 2: Put your iPhone 3G in DFU mode with following instructions.

    * Connect your iPhone to your computer.
    * Turn iPhone off.
    * Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
    * Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
    * A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
    * If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.

Step 3: Once your iPhone is in DFU mode following message will be appeared in iTunes. Click on “OK” , Now hold Option key while clicking Restore in iTunes and browse the OS 3.1.2 or below firmware for your iPhone 2G, 3G. Now the restore process will take 10 – 15 minutes.

Step 4: If you encountered an error message like 1011, 1013, 1015, just ignore them(Actually the firmware3..1.3 is already successfully installed) and use iRecovery/recbot to get the hold of your iPhone again.

I'm fairly sure that iBoot was upgraded from 3.1.3 to 4.0, so the 3.1.3 iBoot (just installed in the DFU restore) won't be able to properly parse the 4.0-set up NAND storage.

Moral of the story: restore to 3.1.3 twice before worrying about a bricked phone--the first time from DFU, the second can be from Recovery mode (Connect to iTunes logo on screen). Both times the restore should error out with a 10xx (most common 1015 error), and after the second restore Recboot/iRecovery/TinyUmbrella throwing the device out of recovery mode should give you a working 3.1.3 phone.

It should always work. Hold power and home until the device turns off.
    Release.
Hld the power button for 5 seconds, then continue holding power and hold home for 15
release power button and hold home for 25.
the device will look like its off.

the iBoot (bootrom) can't be updated with a firmware update, if it could then apple would have closed the 24k exploit (or whatever it's called) a long time ago, I think you meant that the baseband was updated when 4.0 was released

I don't know. I've tried restoring from (I can't tell the difference between recovery or DFU mode) either mode several times and kept getting Error 1015. So considering 4.1 is coming out tomorrow and I'm sure Dev Team et. al will have something figured out within a week or two, I'll just suck it up and deal with the slowness between app loads and switches until then.

Thanks all for the feedback, though. One of the many reasons why I love this forum.

I did this last night, so I know it works...
So I've decided to come back to downgrading since Dev Team's having a hard time figuring out how to jailbreak/unlock 4.1. So much for 4.1.
Back to the issue at hand, I've tried doing this. And I'm still stuck and it doesn't work.

    1. I put my phone in DFU (windows detects new usb sounds and everything) and the screen's still black (I think that constitutes DFU mode?)
    2. Shift+restore to 3.1.3
    3. I get error 1015 every single time I've tried restoring
    4. I use tinyumbrella to kick out of recovery. I get the Emergency dial screen.
    5. I use blackra1n (lastest version... just redownloaded today) to jailbreak it but it never finishes and I end back up in recovery mode.

does it matter that i'm trying to downgrade from 4.0.2? also, i'll reiterate it again but my 3.1.3 SHSH blobs aren't saved on the Cydia servers. SOMEONE PLEASEE HELP
