Question about 4.0.2 and jailbreaking...
Hi all, I just bought a sealed iPhone 4 on Ebay for a decent price. Now what I'm worried about is that I do not know if it is 4.0.1 or 4.0.2. The seller couldn't tell me because it's sealed. I have T-Mobile and obviously want to unlock it. If it is 4.0.2, will I simply be able to wait until 4.1 is jailbroken, update my iPhone to 4.1 officially (keeping in mind I do not have an AT&t sim to officially ctivate the sim with in the first place, but may be able to use a 'hacktivation sim') and then jailbreak/ unlock from there? Or is there a better option? Thanks!

1) When 4.1 comes out next week hope that the DevTeam has a jailbreak ready. Like last time they may have an exploit ready that they have found in the betas and will only announce it once the new firmware is live.
2) With the jailbreakme jailbreak you either need an official sim or a phonebook sim. What do you mean by a hacktivation sim?

You are not going to want to update to 4.1 as 4.1 has a baseband update which kills the ultrasn0w unlock, so even when the 4.1 jailbreak comes out there will be no unlock for it. Your safest bet is if it is on 4.0.2 just stay there, wait for the new jailbreak to come out and hope it is compatible with 4.0.2. That being said the dev team could have another unlock up their sleeve or a way to get to 4.1 without updating the baseband but it is better safe than sorry until you know for sure.

I doubt there is going to be hactivation for the next jailbreak, you should get a micro sim from AT&T to activate.

I think I meant the phonebook sim. I was in a hurry when I wrote the post haha. So if I get a phonebook sim I can update my iPhone to 4.1? I mean surely eventually the dev team will probably be able to jailbreak 4.1 right?

I don't think phonebook sim card will work anymore for the new OS 4.1. I am not discouraging you, it could be a fact.

Odds are the next jailbreak will be back-ported to iOS 4.0.x for this very reason, people on 4.0.2 wanting to keep their unlock (or we'll see a successor to PwnageTool for restoring IPSW files without touching the baseband).
At least I hope it'll be that way, the Dev Team are usually pretty good about that.

I don't see them making a true successor to pwnage tool for iphone 4/3GS but they may do something similar to one of their guides a little while back where you could modify a ipsw in the right place and it would error out just before the baseband update part, so you would technically be updated but the baseband would be preserved and would just have to kick out of recovery.

Problem solved: I was able to contact the seller before he shipped it and he was nice enough to cancel the transaction. Thanks for the info guys, I guess I'll just have to play it safe and buy an iPhone 4 already unlocked, factory unlocked, or confirmed to have 4.0.1, even though I'll probably have to pay a little more haha. Not worth this stress.

Or you could've just waited for 3 days for 4.1 and there'll probalby be a jailbreak within days like every firmware.
