Default Is it possible to upgrade my iphone 3gs from 3.1.2 to 4.0?

I have an iphone 3gs currently at firmware 3.1.2.
I want to upgrade it to atleast 4.0 (or a firmware above 4.0 that can be jailbroken)
I have the SHSH for the current firmware.
Could someone please kindly tell me if this is possible? and if yes, then how?

    Your help is much appreciated.

x98car's guide works! I just did it today. He does cover everything in detail so read it a couple of times. I missed a few things but it work for me error free for the most part.

    - Just backup on itunes and I used pkgbackup for previous cydia apps.
    - I screwed up tiny umbrella the first time, you gotta go advance and then save each shsh locally to your machine then open run the tss server to allow unsigned versions to restore.
    - Hit the shift key and restore and then pick the unsigned version that you downloaded to your desktop. Note, I used the current version 10 of itunes. If your version is too old you will get an error - 3xxx; 3014. I restored 4.0.1 today.
    - Then go to jailbreakme.com on your iphone and slide the jailbreak me slider
    - Once jailbroke, I restored apps and so on, on itunes
    - finally, reinstalled pkgbackup from cydia and then restored the rest of cydia's stuff from pkgbackup.

My phone was so restored I couldn't believe it. Old text, my hesdset is still paired and even my winterboard profile. I didn't realize iTunes did such a good job backing up a phone. Last time I upgraded, it was a chore.

    Thanks for the response.

The guide mentions that i "NEED to have your SHSH for 4.0 or 4.0.1", as i have said in this thread, i am currently at 3.1.2. so in light of this, could you please tell me whether there is still light at the end of the tunnel for me?

    Thanks very much

Trust me when I say you more than likely have 4.0.1 SHSH (don't ask how) just try to save your SHSH with tiny umbrella and I bet they will be there.

in your original post you said you had the shsh's for your current firmware (3.1.2) if that's the case you should also have them for 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, and 4.0.2...I'm not sure why it says "request pending", but before you do anything make sure you use tinyumbrella as suggested by x98car to verify that you have your 4.0.1 shsh's

This thread is exactly what I was looking for also. I jb at 3.1.2 and now need to get above 4 because alot of apps demand it. My shsh have been saved for ages.
My question is what is tiny umbrella? Is it an app or soft ware for my pc?

    Thanks!
