My unlocked 3GS is on 3.1.3 i want to update to 4.0, but i do not know if i will lose my unlock? i do not have a AT&T sim handy and i do not wanna get stuck on activation with out that sim, are there any ways to work around it if that were to happen?? Thanks in advance

What was your phone jailbroke with before?

yes jailbroken then unlocked

When you go into to cydia does it say you have SHSH files saved for any firmwares?

Well you can upgrade to 4.0 and use JailbreakMe but you would have to get a sim card from ebay first to activate before you could Jailbreak an unlock it.

If you were able to jailbreak with redsn0w that means your phone has the old bootrom, so you'd be able to use custom firmwares. The easiest thing would be for you to create a custom firmware with either pwnage tool or sn0wbreeze. Both of those have the option to hacktivate the phone for you, so you wouldn't need a sim. You can create a 4.0 or a 4.0.1.
