Stuck at Apple Logo, can't upgrade to 4.0.1
I made this mistake of trying to erase all the personal data off my phone to sell it.
I was jailbroken with my iPhone 4 on iOS 4.0.0
now I'm stuck at the apple logo.
I tried to enter DFU mode but it errors after verifying with the apple server.
I DO have SHSH onfile with cydia but after editing my host file. (and confirming its redirecting correctly) its still giving that error with the 4.0.1 update I downloaded (yes the correct one for my phone I triple checked)
I could have sworn Cydia had a message at the top that I had SHSH on file for 4.0.0 and 4.0.1
Any suggestions? I'm dead in the water.

I see at least 10 new posts exactly like this today. Do not press the erase content button again.
Anyway, put your host file back to normal and download tinyumbrella
Start TSS server and try to restore to 4.0.1 if not work try 4.0.
If this doesn't work try recovery mode instead of dfu mode and repeat. M
Make sure to follow all of tinyumbrella's instructions by clicking the "click here" for help.

you only use tinyumbrella, if you have the shsh saved on your computer and want to restore from it.
(you can also use it to check if you SHSH is saved on the cydia server)
If you have the shsh saved on the cydia server its even easier.
download the firmware you want to restore here:
iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download
edit the host file and add this at the bottom(remove anything that says gs.apple.com)
then add this:
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
put the phone in DFU mode(not recovery mode)
connect to computer
itunes will see the phone,
Shift-click the restore button(option-click on Mac)
and click on the firmware you just downloaded
then it should start extracted, and verifying the OS.
the same thing happen to me recently, because of Rockapp, and this is exactly what i did to restore it back to jailbroken form

make sure port 80 is open. I had to go into my router and open the port.
after editing the host file, you will have to restart itunes, and you can restart your computer

I got it.
Steps I did.
Edited Win7 firewall settings to make sure itunes has public and private network access.
Edited host file.
Rebooted like you said.
Double check again that the redirection is working.
Booted to DFU mode opened itunes and used the shift click.
4.0.1 is installing.
You sir are a LIFE SAVER!!!!

Little addendum for anyone who follows this thread.
At the end of the update there was an error and the phone rebooted into Recovery mode. It would not leave on its own.
I then used Tiny Umbrella to kick it out of that mode and then it showed up and activated in iTunes.

sorry forgot to mention that, you do get an error at the end, but it did install the OS.
you need to to kick it our of recovery mode when its done, with either tinyumbrelle, irecovery, etc.
