Can I jailbreak 3g if I upgrade to 4.02

If not how do I upgrade to 4.0. I am currently running 3.1.2

I have read that 4.0 is faster.

Just a warning first, a lot of people aren't happy with iOS 4 on iPhone 3G. So, it is not faster. Anyways...

Open Cydia and check what SHSH files it says it has. If it says 4.0/4.0.1 then you can download tinyumbrella, start TSS server, download the firmware you need from iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download and shift-restore to the firmware, and jailbreak with jailbreakme.com

So, 4.0 is NOT faster but has many features, if you have the SHSH files for 3.1.2/3.1.3 etc you can restore to that if you don't like 4.x.x

Can't upgrade to 4.0 w/o the shsh files, but you can upgrade and jailbreak to 4.0.2 with redsn0w, but I'd strongly advise against this as 4.0+ on the 3g (not 3gs) is an abomination to say the least. Stay at 3.1.2 and enjoy the speed. You really wouldn't get much for the upgrade either, much of the good things in the update are only for the 3GS and above.... unless you REALLY love folders and iAds.
