ok i ran as an admin then connected the device and still nada. recognizes the device but lists no SHSH on file. :'( I'm trying to keep hope that I can actually use this phone but i'm completely tech challenged and this sucks! even if I get this to work (since I can't go back to 3.1.2) i need an ATT sim to unlock now, right?

Are you clicking on advanced, choosing firmware 4.0 or 4.0.1 for 3GS then clicking save me SHSH?

i get error 3014. tiny umbrella said "wrote handshake" what am i supposed to do? how will i know if/when restore worked?

Maybe you should try the 3GS downgrade assistant method in my troubleshooting part instead of tiny umbrella for the restore part.

when i do that i get the iphone not eligible for requested build error. i tried to go to 4.0, started in DFU mode.

You sure you have SHSH right?

yes and once i grabbed my ecid i was able to verify that in tiny umbrella. I can see them all correctly in tiny umbrella i just can't get through the restore process.

I dont know what to say, if you have tried all the different troubleshooting at the bottom of my first post I cant help. Tiny umbrella is going to be updated soon with more features and bug fixes so that might work then. Just to verify what is the filename of the ipsw you are trying to restore to?

iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw is the file I am trying to restore to.

Try downloading the 4.0.1 firmware for 3GS and using that instead.

then if you have the SHSHes you will probably be able to downgrade.

OOOOOH MERCY! I used a different computer and it worked!!!!!!! Gracious and thank you sooooo much. One last question...do I want to restore from a previous backup now or no?

That was one of my troubleshooting suggestions hmmm Glad you got it working. Its up to you whether you restore from backup, it will load your previous stuff on there or you can start fresh and reload them yourself.

Easy answer: no. It can slow you down, cause strange problems, and drain your battery... So it's not a good idea.

korin125 is right it can lead to problems but it doesnt automatically mean it will. I restore my backup all the time when I restore and have only ever had an issue once, and that was more an issue of being on 4.0 beta than being jailbroken.

Right, personally I've had problems with iBlanks (always had problems with that though), battery perecentyage will usually stay on, makeitmine is usually still enabled, it's pretty weird to have on a non-jailbroken device. But I think the maost important thing is the battery life, which really seems to make a difference for me.

Unless there's something really important on backup you can't sync, why not set up as new. Either way, it's your choice
