You wont be able to go to 4.1 without SHSH. You can go to 4.2.1 and preserve your baseband though. Are you on windows or Mac?

nope, no errors at all. and i downloaded the 4.21.08 as well and still nothing...

Well, i did the same thing but i did not even need tiny umbrella. You need to make sure you have shsh for 4.2.1. You can find out when you open cydia. Put in DFU , open itunes, shift(option) and restore, pick 4.2.1 fw, in the end it will give you 1013 error code, after this device will be in recovery mode. No worry, just put in DFU mode again and apply green poison. Device should be in 4.2.1 and with your 1.59.00 bb. I did on Mac for two of my iphone 4. It worked. Thanks to x98car....

This will only work without tiny umbrella if you have your hosts pointed to Cydia and not Apple. Telling someone to just do this like you said could lead them to have their baseband updated.

You dont have to use tiny umbrella, but it is much safer to do so then the hosts editing thing. Even if tiny umbrella is not finding your device you should still be able to do it. Are you able to start the TSS server?

Your hosts file is located at \Windows\System32\Drivers\etc

Open it up in notepad and see what it says

That 74.208.10.249 is cydia, so thats what your hosts are pointed to. So if you try a restore to 4.2.1 you should get that error and preserve your baseband. I would say it is still safer to use tiny umbrella and the TSS server but it should work for you either way. That error 1013 is what you want to see.
