Instead of using tiny umbrella to downgrade you can try to just point your hosts to cydia. If you don't know how to do this manually you can use this 3Gs Downgrade Assistant | iPhone News, Help and Guides

have you tried the other method with just editing the hosts files, put it in dfu then restore? Tiny umbrella has nothing to do with this way, it should not be running when you try this. Also restarting your computer after editing the hosts files could help or try using a different computer altogether.

2. DFU mode.
4. Got the error again.

I dont know what else to tell you except try another computer if you can.

I modified my room-mates hosts files and downgraded almost 7 times on her laptop

does this have to be done:
1) Find the shsh file you want to use (e.g. 1111111111111-iphone-3.0.shsh for 3.0)
2) Open cmd.exe and cd to the fw-umbrella-semaphore directory (cd Desktop/fw-umbrella-semaphore)
3) Important! Disable any other servers using port 80 (usually webservers). TinyTSS needs to use it to create it's mini-webserver.
4) If you installed 32bit Java type: tinytss.exe -f 1111111111111-iphone-3.0.shsh
If you installed 64bit Java type: tinytss64.exe -f 1111111111111-iphone-3.0.shsh
Where 1111111111111-iphone-3.0.shsh is the name of the shsh file you want to use
>>>? does it have to be done? if so hows it done?

No that looks like old instructions, tiny umbrella now does that automatically. Although seeing if anything is using port 80 could be key to people having issues now too.
08-28-2010, 11:40 AM #31
how can i sort it out then?
08-28-2010, 12:09 PM #32
Did you ever get to try it on another computer yet?
How to Check and Identify Which Application is Listening or Opening Port 80 and 443 on Windows My Digital Life
I just used these instructions to find out if anything was using port 80 on my pc, seems my tivo desktop server was using it so that could give me problems if I tried using tiny umbrella on this pc.

08-28-2010, 04:44 PM #34
How sure are you they are in cydia?
08-28-2010, 05:00 PM #35
i hit the make my life easier button a while back. Since then I have logged onto cydia and seen the message at the top that said the blobs were on file for 3.1.3, 4.0 and 4.0.1

Ok sounds good, are you sure you are using tiny umbrella right then? You are running it as administrator, plugging in your phone then clicking on advanced and choosing those firmware for 3GS right?
