Got it. Thanks.

i have a iphone 3g on 3.1.3 on 5.13.04 baseband previously jb/unlocked with redsn0w and ultrasn0w.
i would like to just do a clean restore and start over.
in cydia, it shows i have shsh saved for ios 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1
so according to what i've read, it seems like i can only restore to 4.0 or later.
however, according to this thread: All about SHSH i don't need to bother with shsh when restoring? would using restore from dfu work for me? the thing is i've tried ios 4.0 in the past and downgraded to 3.1.3.

Guys, need your help. I bought an iphone 4 today. Jailbroken and unlocked on 4.0.2. It had some contacts, pics, music and other data on it from previous user. I wanted to delete all that data So i did ERASE ALL DATA AND SETTINGS from RESET menu in SETTINGS. Now my iphone is stuck on apple logo, i guess its briked. I know that it has SHSH saved in cydia for 4.1 FW and above ONLY.
Please help me to restore it to 4.0.2. How can i save SHSH locally so i can restore it to 4.0.2 FW using TiUm? Is it possible to save SHSH if your phone is briked?
any help will be appreciated. thank you.

You wont be able to restore it to 4.0.2 without SHSH. Since you have 4.1 SHSH though you are ok. Download your SHSH with tiny umbrella, then start the TSS server, then shift restore to a 4.1 firmware (downloads section at top of page). When you get error 1004 exit recovery with tiny umbrella. You will be on 4.1 with your baseband preserved. Just use limera1n/greenpoison/redsnow 0.9.6rc8 to jailbreak and install ultrasnow from cydia to unlock.

Please can you tell me how come the BB will stay the same? 4.1 FW has 2.**.** BB.

Tiny umbrella will preserve your baseband. It is actually impossible now for you to update your baseband to 2.10 because Apple is not signing that baseband anymore. So as long as you dont try restoring to 4.2.1 your baseband will not be updated.

understood. Second question, TiUm doesnt recognize my iphone bcuz it is briked. Only when im in recovery mode TiUm sees the iphone but it doest show me the SHSH that been saved with cydia. After i click on SAVE SHSH i go to folder where it saves the SHSH and its empty. Sorry for my english, i just dont want to lose my unlock, thats why i ask so much questions.

Use this to find your ecid: iClarified - iPhone - How to Find Your iPhone ECID [Windows]
Then manually put that into tiny umbrella and save your SHSH. Then put the phone in dfu and restore to 4.1 like I said above.

I would like to jailbreak my iPhone 4, but I have a few questions first. I have read as much as I can about the process, however, a few things remain unclear to me.
First, I have already updated to 4.2.1. The phone came loaded with 4.1, but by the time I recevied it, it was way too late to save the SHSH blob.
In my inital attempt I ended up putting the phone into DFU mode pre-maturely and I read that the only way to restore it was to do so through iTunes. I had my 4.2.1 SHSH blob saved, so I decided to test out TinyUmbrealla, but it wouldn't work. Any time I tried to start up the TSS server I would receive the 1013 error. I was only able to restore the phone once I went into my HOSTS file and delted the entries for gs.apple.com that redirected to the Cydia servers. Once I did that and restored 'au natural' everything went to plan.
So this leads me to my question. Did I do something wrong? Why do I receive a 1013 error every time I try to restore with TinyUmbrealla TSS server running? I want to jailbreak my phone, but I don't want to find out later that I won't be able to restore 4.2.1 because the TSS server in TinyUmbrella isn't working.

You received the error because if you direct your hosts at anything but apples server an iPhone 4 won't be able to get the baseband shsh causing the 1013 error. You have your 4.2.1 shsh though so you will be fine in the future. You will be able to restore to a custom 4.2.1 firmware without receiving that error.

I apoglogize, but I do not understand. Is there any way to get this baseband SHSH? Also, what is baseband and what should mine be? I've been scouring the web for an article explaining this whole baseband concept but I haven't found anyone who really seems to know how to explain it.
Finally, what do you mean by 'custom 4.2.1?' I downloaded the IPSW file from the offical apple download server. If I am unable to restore now using the TSS server on TinyUmbrella, how am I supposed to be able to restore it in the future?
I think the problem here is that I don't really understand what baseband is, and how it's involved in the whole restore process.

Baseband is the firmware that controls all communication aspects of the iPhone. It is separate from the normal firmware. On iPhone 4 there is the SHSH for the regular firmware and a separate SHSH for the baseband. The baseband SHSH cannot be saved because it is randomized unlike the regular SHSH. So even if you were to save it they wouldn't work on the next restore. Custom firmware will work because you can take the baseband update out of the firmware you are restoring to. So iTunes will not try and restore the baseband, so will not ask for the baseband SHSH and so will not give that 1013 error. iTunes will only require your 4.2.1 SHSH which you have.

Yeah, but when I try to restore it now I use the shift+click restore method to choose my firmware file. Where do you get this 'custom' firmware? Is it something I have to download elsewhere? If I ever brick my phone after an update and I want to go back to 4.2.1, what's to say it won't just give me the same error because it has the wrong baseband?
Is this 'custom firmware' not available yet? Will it only be released once a new firmware version is released?
In the light, does no one bother to create a custom firmware at the moment because there is no need for it as 4.2.1 is the latest update anyway?

Pwnage tool and snowbreeze can both make custom firmware. Neither has been officially updated yet to support 4.2.1 (although there is a unoffical pwnage tool bundle to make one now) but I am sure they will be updated once the untethered jailbreak comes out. Semaphore the creator of tiny umbrella was also said to be updating tiny umbrella so that after getting that 1013 error from restoring to 4.2.1 it will be able to exit recovery for you.

Isn't Pwnage tool only for Mac? Also, I've never come across Snowbreeze. I just want to make sure that if I jailbreak and brick my phone, I can restore it. Especially if a new firmware version comes out.
Regarding TinyUmbrella, I did see that on his website, but I didn't know what it was in reference to, until now.
One last major question before I do this. Is it possible to brick your phone beyond repair?
