Help jailbreak/update from 3.1.2 to 4.0/4.0.1

Thanks for the info. I was not sure if that was official on cydia since I'm at 3.1.3. It's says I have shsh for 3.1.3 4.0 4.0.1 great. I will be updating my 3GS later today. I've already used sauriks restore method before so I know where to edit the host at. Just wasn't sure if since the phone was never at 4.X if I could update.

Just download the 4.0.1 firmware, shift/click restore to it in itunes, then use redsn0w to jailbreak and activate. No need for AT&T sim for a iphone 3G. Here is the link for redsn0w redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA [iPhone Dev Team]

You will need the 4.0 firmware for iphone 3G too though for redsn0w to work. When it asks for firmware point it to the 4.0 one, it will work fine for 4.0.1 and even 4.0.2

Since you are jailbroken on blackra1n software and on 3.1.2.. you can download or create custom 4.0/4.0.1 ipsw files, then put phone into Recovery mode (not dfu) and restore from itunes

I hope you've got this figured out by now as I have just come across this thread. In itunes you will be asked to activate. you need either the proper sim card (borrow it from someone if you don't have it), or a phonebook sim card.

I got it done from the Redsnow Tutorial n I'm now on 4.0.2..... Jailbroken n Unlocked with Native Multitasking n Folders..... Love the NEW FEEL!!!
