Looking for solution to downgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1
Last night I attempt to jail break my iPhone 4 but when I was syncing with iTunes I wasn't quite sure what I was doing and I've updated my iPhone without knowledge that it now won't jail break.
Have followed the steps detailed on jailbreakme.com which has lead me to these forums. I have tried to edit the "hosts" file but I'm struggling to save the file onto Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 using notepad to open to the file.
Can someone please help me as I have tried to find a solution but downgrading threads seem to be focused on 3GS or older handset?

I don't understand what you mean by alt+restore

You are stuck as apple has stopped signing 4.0.1 and you don't have a way to go back to 4.0.1 now.

hold the shift key (pc) or the option key (mac) while clicking restore and point itunes at your 4.0.1 ipsw (if you don't have it already you can download it from the downloads section of this forum) and it will restore to that which can be jailbroken using jailbreakme
just check and apple is still signing 4.0.1In the end we're all just chalk lines on the concrete, drawn only to be washed away. For the time that I've been given, I am what I am.
