Downgrading to 4.0.1 iPhone 4 from 4.0.2
Downgrading to 4.0.1 iPhone 4 from 4.0.2 without ever being jb on version 4.0.1 and without ever being signed with Cydia ssh server is possible-! I did it-! Only from past experience with screwing up and trying to figure out how to downgrade was I able to use that Knowledge and apply it in a positive way. Very simple. Basically you're going to put your phone in dfu mode where it shows na next to the iPhone on iTunes go to clarified and look for te ipsw files. Download ipsw for iPhone 4 version 4.0.1 and do the magic shift + update on iTunes as discussed in many forums before for downgrading drop the 4.0.1 ipsw file in follow the prompts on iTunes till u get that error code i forgot what it was 4 digit code i believe, Then you're going to need that old irecovery method to break the loop with the USB cable and cd on iPhone screen. Follow those steps as mentioned on many forums before and then manually reboot the phone by
holding power and sleep.
Then iPhone should be restored to 4.0.1 with carrier service and go to jailbreakme.com and run te jb. It worked for me after going to apple to return my new iPhone with 4.0.1 never jb to resolve an issue and to find that the a holes upgraded me to 4.0.2. So hence my mission to restore and jb with jailbreakme.com. It seriously worked for me. I've been around here before and actually came up with a method to restore when the blitz began with the accidental 3.1.2 upgrades I think. So just give it a twirl and let me know. I can write down detailed step by step if needed but not tonight. Thx and gl.

then apple is still signing 4.0.1, you better use tinyumbrella to get your 4.0.1 shsh's while you can, also you can use tinyumbrella to kick you out of recovery mode instead of using irecovery
In the end we're all just chalk lines on the concrete, drawn only to be washed away. For the time that I've been given, I am what I am.

I don't think they are signing because I got errors. Never completed. But who knows. I did this last night august 12th. And I got into dfu because when I tried a regular restore from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1 iTunes said it could not proceed with the restore and put my phone into dfu. Leaving me with no choice but to try that method. I could not go forward or backwards left me in limbo

Download the 4.0.1 firmware through this site: iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download (the firmware is downloaded from Apple, so it is legit).
Then in iTunes on the iPhone page, hold down the shift key and press 'Restore'. Then point to the downloaded file. That's it.We're all just toymakers in the game of life.

Yeah, you can try revery mode. Also check to make sure your hosts file doesn't have any lines that say gs.apple.com in it at all.

OK, then take that out of your hosts file for right now. Since Apple is currently signing 4.0.1 there's no need to redirect through cydia's server. After you change the host file and save it you'll have to close and reopen iTunes.
