stuck on 3.0

Hey guys I have a jailbroken iphone 3g on 3.0 and I have absolutley no idea on how to upgrade it to 4.01 and still be jailbroken. All i know is that I dont want to go to 4.02 as then I wont be able to jailbreak it at the moment.
Any help and tuts would be awsome as its driving me insane lol.

You can't upgrade and keep the jailbreak at the same time. You will need to download the 4.0.1 firmware (from our download section) then hold shift and hit restore in iTunes and choose the FW you just downloaded....and then jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.5-b5 (in our download section).

I downloaded the firmware you mentioned and I have gone into itunes and held shift while hitting restore and when I go to choose the file it doesn't show up, I have even extracted the rar file and still no avail.
I also manually looked through the downloaded firmware and i cannot locate the ipsw file

Rename the file extension from .zip to .ispw
The whole file is the ispw.
Some internet browsers save it as a zip file for some reason.
