Yes you can upgrade, but if you restore your info from a iTunes backup you run the risk of having problems with your iPhone

Oh, Shall I ensure that all info is in the cloud then?
Although, that would just be contacts & emails.....so I can't keep my text messages? I use this phone for business & need to refer back to texts sometimes.
I don't know what to do.

I don't actually know anything about Cloud sorry, but there is some guides online that shows you have to manually take your texts, contacts etc. Off your phone using SSH, and then you just paste them back once you've upgraded

When I mentioned the cloud, I was referring to the way apple stores the info from the phone on the internet (me.com). I forgot that not everyone with an iphone has that account- I just got used to it.

Thanks for the reply..I have another question. I have downloaded the 4.0.1firware ( iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.zip)and have tinyumbrella running with the TSS server running. When I shift+click restore in iTunes the location box pops up. I have pointed it to the compressed file as well as decompressed and pointed it to various folders in the directory however the restore seems to want an *.ipsw file which is not anywhere in the FW that I downloaded. Can you direct me or link to where I need to go to figure out where I'm going wrong here?

You need to change the extension of the file you downloaded from .zip to .ipsw, or redownload it using either firefox or safari. Ie and chrome save the fw as the wrong file type. It should not be a zip or have folders.

You also don't need the TSS server running. Apple is still signing 4.0.1. Just shift+click restore to it. No need for modifying hosts or umbrella.
