Read, read, read... And then read some more. If being jailbroken and/or unlocked matters to you it is extremely important to understand everything that goes along with it. I'm not singling the OP out, but it's so frustrating seeing so many people with unjailbreakable idevices because they dId not bother to read the warnings.

Please people, save you SHSH blobs, it is crucial if you need or care about jailbreaking/unlocking.

It never fails, and it's hilarious every single time. I swear I've seen it for three years, over 15 fw upgrades, it never gets old. Upgrade first, ask questions later.

I did the same stupid thing. Upgradeing my device before searching the Internet about it. I also didn't save anything. So I'm stuck as well. There has to be a way to downgrade back to 4.0.1 without that shsh. And if not, someone smart always finds away to jailbreak the next version. So I believe 4.0.2 will soon be jail broken.

No, there is absolutly no way to downgrade a 3GS or a 4 without shsh's being saved. And I can just about guarantee that 4.0.2 will NOT be jailbroken. There won't be another one until at least 4.1, if then.

Where theirs a will theirs a way.. Some stores are going to be unlocking iPhones on 4.0.2 for a crazy price. And if it can never be unlocked again for a while which I highly doubt. Then I'm patient enough to wait for the next one. I love my iPhone 4 even without the jailbreak.

I think Apple are still signing 4.0.1 so you might want to try and downloading the ipsw then clicking shift+restore in itunes and pointing to 4.0.1 ipsw and see if that works

Remember, a firmware with a .x.x is almost always a fix for a jailbreak. You will probably have to wait for 4.1 unless someone decides to make a whole new jailbreak for an os with no new features.

I guess you've been in the iPhone scene for a long time, saving the SHSH has been said like only a million times, you should have done it bro, at least you didn't require an unlock so your good. BTW check if you might have saved it, chances are you probably pressed the make my life easier button on 3.1.2 or 4.0 before, look into that if your not sure.

ok so super noob question here, if im already JB on 3gs 4.1 can i safely update to 4.2 or will that end the JB? or do i need to always avoid the "check for updates" button in itunes.

there is no jailbreak for 4.0.2 on a 3GS at this time
