3GS question please;)
I just bought a used 3GS from a friend(to replace my very slow 1st Gen) since he got the new iphone 4. The 3GS has firmware 4.0 on it currently. He has AT&T but I have T-Mobile so this phone has never been JB'ed or Unlocked.
My question is, Do I need to downgrade back to the 3.x.x versions in order to get the 4.0/4.0.1 unlocked/JB'ed for my T-Mobile?
Thanx in advance for the help!!

Thanx Will, I'll give it a go and see what happens

Edit; I forgot to mention, I am not able to get to jailbreakme from the 3GS since its not unlocked yet. Has no SIM for it, I only have my T-mobile SIM.Last edited by roneraven; 08-08-2010 at 01:07 PM.

The phone is in the "Must connect to iTunes to activate state" so theres no using wifi or anything on it, just emergency calls, lol. I've been searching and reading though and seems that its almost better to be on the 3.1.3FW so I'm going to downgrade it and see how it goes. I'm sure anything is better than my 1st gen haha
Iappreciate the help Will!!

Just noticed you said it's never been jailbroken so most likely won't have been saved, and basically shsh blobs let you downgrade your firmware, without them your f*cked

Well I found a tutor... that says no shsh need to downgrade
Tutorial: iPhone 3gs 4.0 Beta -> 3.1.3 The Legit Way (No SHSH or JB Tool Used)
The first gens seemed a lot easier to upgrade and downgrade haha

Well not sure what happened, but somehow playing around with it(probably restoring something) it is operational now with 4.0 but registered for AT&T still.
I can't type today, have to keep editing so I don't look illiterate, lol. Turned the wifi on and it's just finished at jailbreakme. So it's looking promising now, lol. Might as well stick with 4.0 unless I have issues. Thanx for all the help Will!!!!

I found it in the unlock guide(repo666.....). I did the unlock with ultrasn0w however it's still locked up to AT&T. Not sure what the deal is at the moment.

dot com,I think it installed it for me as well but I wanted to go step by step haha. Ok, I just loaded up that f0recast thing and it says my 3GS is "NOT" tethered(which according to the guide IS unlockable) and also that my 3GS is "NOT" unlockable. I'm getting confused now, lol. Bootloader is 6.4 and baseband is 05.13.04 if that makes a difference

Don't worry, ultrasn0w unlocks anything at the moment, and what version is yours?, mine is 1.0-1, and the jailbreak you used is un-tethered

No matter what firmware you manage to get installed you'll still be stuck at the emergency call screen. You'll need an AT&T sim to activate the phone before you'll be able to jailbreak and unlock.

jkmonkey - I actually found a SIM inside the phone(he must have had everything transferred, lol). I didn't know it was in there.
Will - I didn't pay attention to what version it was, I'll check in a few and edit
I accidentally upgraded to 4.0.1 so I'm trying to get back to 4.0. Today is not my day haha

4.0.1 and 4.0 are the same fw. The bars just look different on 4.0.1, that's all. After you install ultrasn0w from cydia just reboot the phone, you should then be able to swap the AT&T sim for you T mobile sim.
oh and hang on to that AT&T sim, it'll come in handy in the future

back in the 1.1.1 days, we used to call a certain number on the emergency call screen to get to the settings to turn on wifi, then another number to get into phone and make a contact that will lead to jailbreakme.com, and then just click on the contact. sadly, i don't remember the 2 numbers and i don't think it works on 4.0 anymore.
