Is ios 4.1 safe for me?

I have an jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3g running on 3.1.3. I was wondering if it was safe to upgrade to the new 4.1 software.

I have a few questions:
What are some precautions I can take to make sure my unlock is safe?
and What should I use to upgrade?

I'm not techsavvy so if you could explain thoroughly I'd appreciate it greatly.

Stay with 3.1.3 for now, iOS4 is slow on the 3G's

That's true korin, but 3.1.3 still as the best app support at the moment

I absolutely agree, it's the only reason I don't go crazy with my iPod Touch 1G (which can't update to iOS4), everything works.
