3GS 3.1 to 4.0?

The only blobs I have saved are from 4.0. I have the old bootrom. Am I stuck at 3.1? I tried updating from 3.1 to 4.0 since the 4.0 blobs are saved on cydia. I edited the host file on Windows 7 ( I can't find the host file on my mac and don't understand how to edit it). Any help please would be appreciated. Thanks!

I *think* you are required 3.1.2, I don't believe 3.1 will work.

with the old bootrom you will need to jailbreak it first and then you can go to any firmware that you choose by using custom firmwares, once you are jailbroken and have created the custom firmware that you want you will need to use shift+restore (pc) or option+restore (mac) to restore to that firmware, no host file editing needed with custom firmwares because they bypass the apple signing process, hope this helps you

Many thanks. I did try that but I get the 3194 error while it's verifying with apple. What did I do wrong? Do I need to use an older version of iTunes perhaps?

Its on 3.1
I figured I would try 4.0 since those are the only blobs on cydia. Thanks.

Try this:
Restore iPhone 3GS to 3.1.2 Using SHSHs on File with Cydia | Windows
except obviously for 4.0 instead of 3.1.2.
