Iphone 3g 3.0 to 4.0 unlock

aight guys, im sorry im sure this has been asked a billion times, but i just cant wrap my head around the right procedure to unlock this thing as it seems like there is wayy to many options.

Its been a good year it seems like since i have even bothered to keep up with all the cool tools and what not.

Would someone mind pointing me in the right direction for my particular phone. I'm confident i can figure out once i know what direction to take with it , i just cant pick where to start....

Im on 3.0.1 on a 8g 3g iphone with 4.26.08

all the upgrade info seems to be starting with os 3.1

install official 4.0 in iTunes, jailbreak with redsn0w, unlock with ultrasn0w from cydia once jailbroken, here is a link for a tutorial iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.0]

Can i upgrade through Itunes to 4.0 entirely, or do i need to follow that procedure and DL the Restore file off that site....? im on a slow connection right now ands looking like a 10 hour DL

Just upgrade to 4.0 via iTunes, you can then JB with redsn0w from stock 4.0.

when you update thru iTunes it downloads the file that redsn0w needs, no need to download it twice
